The Crushing Sound of Metal Hitting Metal

After work Saturday I went out to a small show at a coffee house in Thomasville and afterward I headed to my sister’s place to stay the night. After what seemed like an eternity due to my exhaustion I arrived after a 45 minute drive and passed her house. I went further up the road to turn around; that’s when I noticed there was a huge crowd near the bars up the road. I finally arrived at my sister’s and parked on the side of the street. Her house is a duplex and the downside is there is not enough parking for guests.

I was so tired I didn’t think to park on a smaller road that would be less frequented by the college students heading to the bars. I headed inside and my sister greeted me with dinner she made. We ate and watched House together while catching up on the last weeks events. That’s when I heard a crash the wheels started turning in my head and I realized my car was parked on the street. It was that terrible sound you can feel in the pit of your stomach; metal hitting metal. I peeked out the window but the bushes were in the way of my view. I walked outside and didn’t see a car stopped so I figured my car was fine. I thought some other car must have been hit.

That’s when my sister’s boyfriend called and asked if we wanted to meet up to hang out with him and some friends. As we were changing to go out we heard a knock on the door. Since her house is near bars my sister was being cautious about opening the door until we found out it was her neighbor Frank. We opened the door and he said “I think someone hit your car.” I ran out barefoot to check out the damage. I noticed broken glass in the street and that my mudflap was hanging off. The person hit my mirror and left it almost dangling off, the actual mirror completely demolished. There were minor scratches on the car and of course the mudflap was hanging off. Frank explained that he heard the culprit disappear into the bar crowd up the road. He heard them in a red neck voice saying” ‘ey man you think we hit somethin’ back there?” and the other voice responding,” I don’ know man.” All I could think of is Boomhauer from King of the Hill when he did the impersonation.

I realize now I should have filed a police report. I figured they wouldn’t find the guys who by that point had disappeared into a bar to continue drinking. I am pretty sure they were drunk when they hit my car. I am never parking on a street near bars at night again.
